Twin Cities mark anniversary of Prince's death

The dance parties were a nod to the spontaneous all-night parties Prince was known to host at Paisley Park.

Prince Rogers Nelson, a.k.a. Prince, was born on June 7, 1958 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Five of Prince's albums landed in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 in the weeks following his death and his record sales jumped by more than 40,000% - but the presence of the tunes on the charts gradually slowed down once the shock of his passing wore off.

"I am stunned and heartbroken", he wrote.

"I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here today", said Diana Rivera of Chicago.

Elsewhere, Prince's first ex-wife, Mayte Garcia, released her book about her first love. titled The Most Beautiful, and claimed during an interview that Prince, who died without a will according to his family, actually did have one? She says it's hard knowing that Prince is no longer here, but that "his spirit, his energy is still with us".

"I've been listening to Wesley's version of "Purple Rain" for about three years now, and I'm still not exhausted of it", Wright tells The Boot.

"Sometimes It Snows in April" (from 1986's Parade) -- One of Prince's greatest ballads, it's surprising in retrospect that this song never became a hit, but it took on new relevance following Prince's death in April of a year ago; D'Angelo paid tribute to Prince when he performed this song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Prince's estate has sued the Tidal streaming service of rap mogul Jay Z, demanding it take down most of the catalog of the late pop icon.

Adams said Prince's tenacity and drive to do things his own way helped Adams, an actor, realize it was OK to be herself.

Witnesses at the death scene told investigators that Prince struggled with opioid abuse and withdraw.

Throughout his career, Prince was extremely particular about how his music was released and distributed.

Former art director Steve Parke can still recall the moment he found out that the Purple Rain star had died. "But I listened to it, and thought, you know, I'm just going to do it!"

"By all accounts, as far as I'm concerned, he seemed like one of the healthiest people that I knew as far as what he put in his body", says Day. He said he had always liked his music, but "after he died, you started liking his songs all over again".
