North Korea parades around a bunch of dicks for founder's birthday celebration

It has warned of a nuclear attack on the United States in retaliation for any sign of aggression.

The attempted launch Sunday in North Korea came hours before Vice President Mike Pence, briefed about the situation while aboard Air Force Two, was set to arrive in South Korea.

China, North Korea's sole major ally and neighbour which nevertheless opposes its weapons program, on Friday again called for talks to defuse the crisis.

"We're prepared to respond to an all-out war with an all-out war, and we are ready to hit back with nuclear attacks of our own style against any nuclear attacks", the country's No.2 official, Choe Ryong-Hae, said in a speech at a ceremony that preceded the large military parade broadcast live by the North's Korean Central TV. That threat, however, has been made numerous times in the past.

Prototype intercontinental ballistic missiles have highlighted a broad range of military hardware North Korea displayed in a massive parade honoring the country's late founding father.

On Friday, the day before North Korea's military parade, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged both the United States and North Korea to restrain themselves, calling on both sides to stop provoking and threatening each other.

North Korea's Pukkuksong submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) were also on parade for the first time.

North Korea has not made secret its desire to boost its military power, while a U.S. naval strike group is now heading to waters off the Korean Peninsula in a show of force, following high-profile USA military attacks this month on Syria and the Islamic State in a remote part of Afghanistan.

On Twitter, Mr Trump said he had "great confidence" China would "properly deal with North Korea".

Tal Inbar, a chief researcher at the Fisher Air and Space Institute, said the missiles "appear to be the size of intercontinental ballistic missiles which could potentially cover the entire area of the United States".

According to reports from Fox News, the military exercises in South Korea come just days after the USA launched a similar surprise military drill at the Kadena Air Base in Japan, using HH-60 Pave Hawks, F-15 Eagles, E-3 Sentries and KC-135 Stratotankers.

"It's not hard to see that ever since the United States and Republic of Korea chose to deploy THAAD, the situation has not become harmonious but has become more tense", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang, said in response to a question about the system.

In his annual New Year's address, Kim said that North Korea's preparations for an ICBM launch have "reached the final stage".

During the pomp and circumstance at Kim II Sung square, citizens showed their revolutionary fervor with choreographed performances while vehicles displaying North Korea's military arsenal rolled by.

He said Japan's government has routinely coordinated with representatives of tens of thousands of Japanese residents in South Korea on contingency plans.

In Pyongyang, retired soldier Ho Song Chol told Reuters that North Korea would win should there be any conflict with the United States.

This development comes amidst speculations that the regime was preparing to conduct a nuclear test.
