The New York Rangers defeated the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden to tie the first round match up at two games a piece in the opening round. The Rangers had scored a sum total of four goals through their six-game home playoff losing streak. Jeff Petry and Paul Byron also had goals for Montreal, which wasted early leads of 1-0 and 2-1. In that the Canadiens forced the Rangers into playing a style of hockey that they are not built for.
The Canadiens hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Eastern Confernce series that resumes Tuesday night.
It looks as if Tanner Glass will be sitting in the press box tonight for Pavel Buchnevich.
Game 4 will likely come down to which team's slumping offensive players step up. Aided by a string of turnovers and a persistent failure to slow New York's forwards down in the neutral zone, the Rangers had a material territorial edge for nearly the entire period.
About a minute later, Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov misplayed the puck along the boards and Fast grabbed the loose puck and slid it through the legs of Price for an unassisted goal at 11:39 to open the scoring. D Kevin Klein was scratched after playing Game 3. The Rangers generated only 21 shots on Sunday, and their offense will need to do more in order to beat Price.
A melee broke out when Steve Ott flattened Zuccarello and it was the Rangers who seemed to get a lift from it as they tied the score 9:58 into the second.
"After what happened in Montreal, you know for sure that the game is not over until it's over", Lundqvist said.
Price had a.944 save percentage and a 1.53 goals-against average, which was as much a reflection on the Rangers' inability to create net-front traffic and an 0-for-10 power play that spent more of its time chasing the puck down the ice than setting up in the Canadiens' zone than Price making spectacular saves. He was awesome in the face-off centre last game, obviously scored a big goal.
Radulov jammed the puck in from the edge of the crease after a feed from Max Pacioretty.
It took 37:37 spanning the first and second periods to beat either goaltender.
The Rangers still led the Canadiens in hits in Game 4. He had a good year, a 54-point season including six points in the last six regular-season games, but more importantly he had a quiet year. Neither Miller nor Stepan prioritized gaining possession of the puck, instead focusing on taking the body. Alexander Radulov started the play by winning a puck battle in the neutral zone and triggering a 2-on-1 with Mitchell and Shea Weber.
CF = Corsi For, FF = Fenwick For, SF = Shots For, SCF = Scoring Chances For, HDSCF = High Danger Scoring Chances For. "In the second and third period we tried, but we weren't able to find the back of the net".
The Canadiens had a flurry of chances after that. Lundqvist lost his stick for a second time about five minutes later, but the puck was cleared out of danger.
Also, it appears that Michael Grabner, Oscar Lindberg and Jesper Fast will be on a line together tonight. Clendening, who is no defensive stud in his own right is a power play specialist who could help turn things around for the unit. But Kuhnhackl found the back of the net on a rebound less than two minutes later to make it 4-3 before Jenner put Columbus back up by two. Their adaptability has been a strength in this series.
"In the playoffs, teams make adjustments and we have to be ready for the next game", Julien said.
