Andretti drivers enthusiastic about Alonso's Indy 500 run

Ricciardo has previously expressed an interest in racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and while he thinks Alonso's Indy 500 shot will open some doors for F1 drivers, he is not yet thinking about entering the legendary French endurance race.

If the 35-year-old can triumph at the Brickyard, a sensational outcome for someone who has never raced on oval circuits, Alonso would still have to win the French classic to complete the triple and there are no plans for that as yet. But it is cool that he is doing it, I think personally he has picked a very good time to do it. "But I think the situation with the auto [in F1] is hard and he wants to try something else".

His first shakedown in his Andretti Autosport Dallara Honda will come on May 3 in an all-day practice session at the 2.5 mile (4km) Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

"It will be very interesting to understand the potential of Alonso at Indy because it's completely another world, especially when you race on the oval".

"It will be a great challenge and very interesting to see".

Marc Marquez, who has won three of the last four MotoGP titles, backs his fellow Spaniard to be very competitive at the event.

"Fernando is missing a good one", Ricciardo said via Autosport.

"[The Indy 500] is a race that's hard to understand from outside". "Then again, if you're not fighting at the front, it can be a long race around there. I certainly think he has the talent to adjust, adapt and get on with it".
