US naval armada to be in Sea of Japan in days

Like Spicer, he said it will wind up near the Korean Peninsula to reassure USA allies.

"The president said we have an armada that's going toward the peninsula", Spicer said. "That's a fact, it happened. It is happening, rather", said White House spokesman Sean Spicer at a briefing.

The US government said last week the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier was in a group being dispatched to the Sea of Japan to send a "powerful signal" to North Korea.

The location of the flotilla was revealed by the US Navy itself, which posted a photo online of the aircraft carrier passing through the Sundra Strait between Sumatra and Java in Indonesia.

Saturday was when the Democratic People's Republic of Korea showcased its military muscle during celebrations marking the 105th birth anniversary of DPRK founder Kim Il Sung, Xinhua reported on Wednesday.

Mere days after the announcement about the strike group's new course, President Donald Trump weighed in on the North Korean threat.

When Trump originally spoke of the matter he clearly implied - or at least made it seem as if - the Carl Vinson was heading to the Korean Peninsula at that exact moment, possibly resulting in a standoff with North Korea. That's more than 3,000 miles southwest of the Korean peninsula.

He added that the presence of tens of thousands of US personnel in South Korea and Japan "gives me great confidence that the United States presence in the Asian Pacific is strong, and under President Trump's leadership it will be stronger still". And I will say this: "He is doing the wrong thing".

On April 12, addressing tensions over Pyongyang's ballistic missile testing, Trump told Fox Business, "We are sending an armada, very powerful". "The aircraft carrier was sleep-walking", said another.

It also comes as the White House faces ongoing credibility issues on a broad range of topics including the size of Trump's inaugural crowd, his unsubstantiated claim that he was "wiretapped" by the Obama administration and his unsupported assertion millions of votes in November's election were illegal.

An F/A-18 pilot assigned to the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier safely ejected during a training flight while in transit in the Celebes Sea, the US Navy said Friday.

Tensions have been building between North Korea and the US.

Later, he added: "We said that it was heading there, and it was heading there".
