Terror Suspected In Deadly Paris Shooting Days Before Election

"Will have a big effect on presidential election!".

Former Prime Minister Fillon has tried to rebound from an expenses scandal by presenting himself as a safe, experienced pair of hands at a time of deep global uncertainty following Britain's decision to leave the European Union and Donald Trump's rise to the White House.

Cazeneuve, a Socialist, said Le Pen's National Front (FN) "after each attack, seeks to exploit it and use it for purely political means".

There's a lot riding on the French election. Here's what you need to know.

The president is elected directly by the people in a vote of one or two rounds. Last week, German president Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged the French people not to vote for anti-EU candidates. Le Pen blamed "radical Islam" for the attack in a follow-up statement Friday, the last day candidates are allowed to campaign before Sunday's vote.

Here are the five legitimate contenders, according to The New York Times.

Despite a promise not to campaign, Le Pen spoke on Friday morning, calling on the French government to immediately reinstate border checks and expel foreigners being monitored by the intelligence services.

Left-wing insurgent Jean-Luc Mélenchon warned against allowing panic to "interrupt democracy". In a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel a year ago, President Obama joked, "You know, if I were here and I were German and I had to vote, I might support her".

The attack, claimed by the Islamic State, threw open radically opposing visions and discussions among the Presidential candidates.

He accused Le Pen of lying when she claimed she could have prevented previous attacks, had she been in office.

Speaking with the AP, Trump clarified that he thought the attack would "probably help" Le Pen, specifically. However, she will make a record as a female in her way to become a head of state in France.

In comments to the Associated Press, he said he was not endorsing Le Pen, but nevertheless called her the candidate who is "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France". Macron posted video of the phone call on social media and it was widely shared.

Mr Macron said the first task of a president was to protect French citizens and he would be "implacable" in combating the Islamist threat.

An Obama spokesman later said that the call was not intended as an explicit endorsement of Macron.

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron said he was in solidarity with law enforcement and offered his condolences to the family of the dead police officer.

What are the major issues at play?

With eurospectics Le Pen and Melenchon in the race, the outcome could have a bearing on France's place in Europe.

The details of Fillon and Le Pen's final electoral rallies have been kept under wraps.
