Serena Williams confirms pregnancy, to take break from tennis

Williams announced her engagement to the co-founder of the website Reddit, 33-year-old Alexis Ohanian, in December after dating for more than a year.

Tennis player Serena Williams offered up a side profile shot of herself in a yellow swimsuit with a caption that read "20 weeks" on Snapchat.

After Serena deleted her Snapchat post, everyone started speculating if she was actually pregnant.

Serena Williams is pregnant with her first child, her spokesperson has confirmed.

A number of players stand to benefit from Williams' absence for the remainder of the year, including German Angelique Kerber who last year unseated the American from the top of the world rankings.

Australians Evonne Goolagong and Margaret Court also won majors after having children.

The announcement comes one week after Victoria Azarenka, the former world No1 and two-time grand slam champion, announced she will return to the tour after 14-month layoff that included the birth of her son, Leo, in December. So far, wedding plans are being kept under wraps, so we'll just have to keep a close eye on social media for clues.

But later her spokeswoman confirmed the news.

Konta's three WTA titles have come in the past nine months and she has only lost one final to date, proving her burgeoning big-game temperament. Williams hasn't played since winning the Australian Open in late January. She had also skipped two Women's Tennis Association tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami purportedly over a knee problem.

The younger Williams sister is just one Grand Slam short of Margaret Court, who collected many of hers in an era when the difficulties of global travel often diluted the fields.

News of a little one immediately sent Twitter into a tizzy about Williams, given that good friend Beyonce is pregnant with twins.

Belgian right-hander Kim Clijsters retired to give birth to daughter Jada before returning at age 26.

She has bestrode tennis like a colossus, and now it looks like she may have won the Australian Open in January while in the early stages of pregnancy.

Here at Now we're sending HUGE congratulations to Serena and Alexis on this lovely news. Serena won her 23th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open without losing any set during her seventh week of pregnancy.
