The photo was later deleted. She waited more than six hours to make any public comment, stoking furious debate among tennis fans about whether or not she was joking.
FILE - In this January 28, 2017, file photo, Alexis Ohanian, fiance of Serena Williams, watches Williams play her sister, Venus, in the women's singles final at the Australian Open tennis championships in Melbourne, Australia.
"Obviously she has been very dominant and that's just testament to what an wonderful tennis player she is".
For fans and friends the announcement underscored Williams' superwoman status.
Serena Williams has shared a picture on Snapchat saying she's 20 weeks pregnant.
"We're losing one of the most powerful brands in the game for a while, but Maria Sharapova is about to return (from a drugs suspension)", he said.
"'Auntie Caro' sounds pretty good to me", the Dane wrote on Twitter. "Because that's technically a doubles match".
If the snap was an announcement of firsts, Williams is expecting her first child with Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, whom she got engaged to late a year ago.
They tweeted congratulations to Serena before deleting the post.

Belgium's Kim Clijsters triumphed at the US Open in 2009 to become only the third mother to win a grand slam, following in the footsteps of fellow tennis moms Court and Evonne Goolagong.
If Serena is indeed 20 weeks pregnant then she must have been in the early stages of pregnancy when she won the Australian Open in January.
Other women have left the tour to have children and returned at a high level, though none has done so at Williams' age.
"We have not been informed, nor do we have confirmation", a tour spokesperson said.
While she was quick to remove the photo from her account, her publicist has since confirmed the news she is pregnant.
Serena Williams now holds the title for the most Grand Slam wins with 23 titles, the most for any player man or woman.
Williams wouldn't be the first top women's player to return to competition after having a baby, but she would be the oldest.
But she has been inactive since her win over elder sister Venus in the final at Melbourne Park.
