The Orioles and Red Sox didn't need to spark an already smoldering rivalry that's developed over the last few seasons, but that's exactly what happened on Friday night. The Red Sox dropped three of four to Detroit during the first week of the campaign, but bounced back by taking two of three from the struggling Toronto Blue Jays in the third week, including a 4-1 victory as -177 chalk in Thursday's series finale. In the second, though, Bundy faced his first jam of the game.
"It was a tough one", Bundy said.
Both teams threatened in their next opportunities, but neither capitalized.
The first run of the ballgame crossed the plate in the bottom of the third thanks to some small-ball from the top of the lineup. With one out, Craig Gentry ripped a double down the line for his third hit of the year. However, Machado blasted his third home run of the season to double the Orioles lead to 2-0.
For the next few innings, Bundy was masterful yet again.
Boston sends knuckleballer Steven Wright to the mound on Saturday, while Jayson Aquino is expected to make his first major league start for the Orioles.
We O's fans know that Manny has done some...questionable...things in the past. His two hits on the night upped his season average to.200 - baby steps!
Bradley was batting.286 in four games. Mitch Moreland leads Boston with 21 hits and eight RBI while Andrew Benintendi and Mookie Betts have combined for 38 hits and 18 RBI.
After the game Pedroia said he wasn't mad about the play, though you could tell that wasn't necessarily the truth.
Following a Dustin Pedroia 3-2 fly-ball out to move the lead runner to third with an out, Hart beautifully painted the inside corner with two flawless sinkers to put Benintendi down on strikes. Betts went 0-for-4 Friday, including a popout against Mychal Givens to end the eighth inning with the possible tying run on base.
Score that yet another win for the deep bullpen! His season ERA is now at 1.37. The injury occurred when Machado slid into second on a force play and appeared to unintentionally spike Pedroia in the back of the left leg. Pablo Sandoval replaced Pedroia at second.
At the same time, Showalter emerged from the dugout to challenge that Machado actually beat the initial throw - which he didn't. A Trumbo strikeout ended the inning.
Brad Brach worked a flawless ninth for his third save - all in the past three nights.
Machado also knows there's a pretty good chance he'll get a pitch to the ribs at some point this weekend.
The lefty-heavy schedule has meant plenty of playing time for righty-swinging rookie Trey Mancini, who has started against all seven southpaws and hit so well that he's earned opportunities against right-handers, too.
He retired the side - the middle of the lineup - and wrapped up the shutout.
Pomeranz answered a stellar season-opening start versus Baltimore with a hard one against Tampa Bay on Sunday, allowing five runs on as many hits - including two homers - in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision.
