Second, Pence must respond to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull's inevitable question about exactly how the United States will engage in Asia, after Trump's populist abandonment of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal.
US Vice President Mike Pence is expected to turn on the charm for Malcolm Turnbull during his whirlwind weekend visit to Sydney.
Last week, I previewed the importance of Pence's visit, the first of any cabinet official in Donald Trump's administration to Southeast Asia.
Mr Caruso also stated that Vice-President Pence's goal is "to reassure Australia of the closeness of the relationship, the value that the United States puts on this relationship, and that this is something the new administration intends to work on going forward".
SYDNEY (AP) - Vice President Mike Pence sought to reassure Australia on Saturday that the USA remains committed to the countries' longtime alliance, as he tried to patch up relations that were left frayed when President Donald Trump got into a spat with Australia's leader over a refugee resettlement deal.

Mr Turnbull opened the bilateral talks at Admiralty House by speaking of how the relationship between Australia and the USA stretched back to the battlefields of World War One.
The message and images sought to address questions in the Muslim world about Trump after his push for travel bans that would temporarily suspend visas from six predominantly-Muslim countries and halt the USA refugee program.
Mr Pence was officially greeted by the Governor-General Peter Cosgrove at Admiralty House on the Kirribilli foreshore, before holding talks with Mr Turnbull.
