Jamie Carragher was appalled by Theo Walcott's comments after Crystal Palace defeat

Arsenal's despondent manager Arsene Wenger was left to assess the consequences of a "damaging" and "worrying defeat" after a toothless 3-0 reverse at relegation-threatened Crystal Palace on Monday left their top-four aspirations in jeopardy.

Wenger would not comment on his future, insisting his focus is the team and they must act fast.

"I think sometimes they are coming out and looking after themselves - "I'll say this and I was honest".

"I think we had the opportunities to score goals, and I think that tonight tactically was the players being aware of what had to happen to beat Arsenal".

Wenger expressed his disappointment after the defeat to Palace, saying they fell flat in what he deemed a "must-win" game.

"I'm not in the mood to speak about it", said Wenger. "To see that we lost the game in the way we did, that's very disappointing".

A fourth successive away Premier League defeat - the first time Wenger has endured such a run at the club - leaves Arsenal seven points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City in the race for Champions League qualfication. "We're very unhappy in the dressing room".

Arsene Wenger attempts to underplay Arsenal's abysmal performance against Crystal Palace, citing only their lack of scoring. They came here with the hope they'd win the game.

Asked to assess his team's top-four chances, Wenger said: "As very hard, like you, certainly". "In the second half they were stronger than us but the second goal was unfortunate and the penalty killed our game".

Meanwhile, Arsenal winger Theo Walcott also apologised to the fans following the humiliating defeat.

"It's the best week", said the 62-year-old. We were unbeaten for a long time away from home, and now we can not win away from home.

"They were sharper and more decisive than us", he said. Hopefully we haven't been dragged straight back into it, but judging on that performance tonight, it looks like we have.

"Palace have beaten Chelsea two weeks ago, and they beat us tonight, so that shows they have the quality".
