Barack Obama: Dan Rooney was a 'championship-caliber good man'

And on Saturday, the team who shares a stadium that Rooney helped create, will pay tribute to a legend with unique helmets.

Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis issued a statement honoring the life of former Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney who died on Thursday. They will also be wearing an emblem to honor Rooney, but they're opting for the Steelers logo on the right side of their gold helmets.

Rooney, in addition to his ownership duties with the Steelers, a franchise founded by his father, served as USA ambassador to Ireland during Obama's first term. Not only was Rooney part of six Steelers Super Bowl Championships, he left an indelible mark on the National Football League itself.

"Dan Rooney exemplified the very best of Pittsburgh". He and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers set the standard for operating a first-class professional sports franchise - both on and off the field - and his generous contributions to our community will never be forgotten. "Personally, I'll always be grateful for the guidance and friendship he provided to me over the years".

"Our family has been blessed to call Dan and the Rooney family our partners and dear friends for more than six decades, and we are deeply saddened by today's news".
