Boston's injury-riddled roster and lack of depth were on display in the loss.
Tyler Bozak scored 1:37 into overtime to cap Toronto's comeback from two goals down in the second period, and the Maple Leafs beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 Monday night to take a 2-1 lead in the first-round series.
"I always say that you make your money during the season, but you make your reputation in the playoffs, and right now he's showing everybody that he's a gamer", Senators coach Guy Boucher said of Ryan. At the other end, Rask was fortunate when a blast by Mike Hoffman, seeking his third goal of the game, rang off the iron.
Noel Acciari, David Backes and David Pastrnak answered for the Bruins in their second straight three-goal second period.
Anderson stopped all nine shots Boston sent his way in the third and Rask brushed aside seven to send the game to overtime. John-Michael Liles assisted on two of Boston's three goals.
In the first game of the playoff last week in Ottawa, it was the Senators who could not hang on to a 1-0 lead heading into the third period, in which the Bruins scored twice to take a 2-1 win. Hoffman lit the lamp for the second time to open up the game 3-0. It's going to probably be the most intense game of the series so far.
But the spandex set eventually disappeared, to be replaced that night by the city's hard-core hockey fans, who haven't had an NHL playoff game at which to vent their excitement since 2014, the last time the Bruins played a home playoff date.
Help is on the way for the banged-up Boston Bruins as they fight to keep their Stanley Cup Playoff hopes alive. Craig Anderson finished with 17 saves.
"It was tough. You've got to stay postive as much as you can", Hoffman said. But at the same time I think we can do a much better job making sure that he doesn't get to play his game as much as he wants to. He's also turned the puck over when trying to force passes instead of taking his own shots.
In overtime, on a night where the whistles were essentially put away late, Ottawa got a gift power play as the officials somehow seemed fit to call Riley Nash with the retaliation after a play where Ryan could have easily been whistled as well with coincidental minors, or even Ryan going off solo. The unit stood tall again a short while later when the club was called for too many men.
Overall, Rask has faced just nine shots from the high-danger area at even strength, stopping all of them, while allowing two goals on 10 shots from the medium-danger area. Colin Miller skated during warmups but missed his second straight game after suffering a lower-body injury in Game 1.
Miller had been knocked out of the lineup when he was felled by a leg check by the Sens' Mark Borowiecki in Game 1 of the series.
Blues forward David Perron said Allen never got rattled during his struggles.
