Three killed in California shooting spree

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Muhammad approached a vehicle in between shootings, but he spared the lives of two women who were in the auto with a child.

The suspect, 39-year-old Kori Ali Muhammad, posted anti-white and anti-Christian messages on his Facebook page, and is a rap music artist. CBS13 has learned he attended high school and college in the Sacramento area.

Officers witnessed him yell "Allah Akbar", Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Tuesday afternoon, adding that he has written anti-government sentiments on social media as well as posts saying that he does not like white people.

Dyer said Muhammad fired at least 16 rounds from a large-caliber handgun in less than a minute at four downtown Fresno locations at about 10:45 a.m. local time before he was spotted running through the streets by a police officer. He did call the shootings a hate crime.

"These were unprovoked attacks by an individual that was intent on carrying out homicides today, and he did that", he said. One of the men was a PG&E worker who was sitting in the passenger seat of a work truck.

Dyer said that two of the victims were shot outside a Catholic Charities location; the third victim, a Pacific Gas & Electric employee, was shot while riding in a company vehicle, and a fourth man was shot at but not injured.

The Fresno Bee reported the suspect was also wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard at a Fresno Motel on Sunday, Reuters said. He also had several probation violations.

Police had issued a plea for the public's help to find Muhammad.

He wrote that his "kill rate increases tremendously on the other side" and also posted about "white devils", themes he dwelled on in hip-hop videos that he posted on YouTube. The gun may have been picked up by someone else, Dyer said.

Muhammad now faces four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, according to court records.

Fresno police chief says a man arrested after killing three people told investigators he wanted to kill as many white people as possible after seeing he was wanted in the death of a security guard. The term means "God is great" in Arabic.

He claimed insanity, and his attorney requested a psychiatric examination for his client, saying Muhammad "appeared eccentric with some freaky beliefs".

Stephen Hughes says he and his wife rushed home Tuesday after receiving a frantic call from a neighbor. He said he was known to be homeless at times, and had associated with gangs. Fresno police chief said his former name was Cory McDonald.

At that point, Police say he reloaded his revolver and walked south towards Catholic Charities where he opened fire on another white male.
