April 16 (ANI): Manchester City came out with a dominant performance as they defeated Southampton 3-0 to strengthen their hopes of a top-four Premier League finish at the St. Mary's Stadium here on Saturday.
Vincent Kompany claimed his first goal in 20 months when he headed home David Silva's 55th minute corner.
Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane and Sergio Aguero were all on the scoresheet for City as they comfortably swept aside Southampton at St Marys.
Just three minutes later and it was 3-0, Aguero this time heading home a pinpoint De Bruyne cross to wrap up the three points for Pep Guardiola's side.
With six games remaining City have 64 points, one more than fourth-placed Liverpool, who visit West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
"This result is so important for our qualification for the Champions League", said Guardiola, whose side host neighbours United in their next league game.
"I'm going to see the game to see United because we play them in 10 days and I want to see how they play in case I can discover something".
"I scored in front of the away fans and for me it was a great feeling", the Belgian said.
Manchester City have 64 points after 32 matches, only two fewer than their final points total from last season.
Southampton have shown good steel of late, however, losing just one of their last six matches prior to this weekend, and they almost snatched a leveller when defender Yoshida peeled off at the back post but sent his header straight at Claudio Bravo.
Belgium worldwide Vincent Kompany is being touted to play in Manchester City's FA Cup semi-final fiery affair with rivals Arsenal. We didn't show today a good Southampton with good quality on the pitch. Pep Guardiola changed all football and gave more opportunities for a trainer to think about football; the recovery of the ball.
City, who won the competition in 2011, head into the game as favourites following a poor run of form for the Gunners which has seen many calling for an end to Arsene Wenger's tenure at the Emirates Stadium.
"We showed we could make good opportunities against this team but it was not sufficient and it was hard for us".
