Shooter targets random white men on Fresno streets; kills 3

Kori Ali Muhammad, 39, was arrested shortly after his Tuesday morning rampage on the streets of Fresno that left three white men dead and shots were fired at a fourth.

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Three men were having a seemingly ordinary day in downtown Fresno, California, before they were singled out at random and killed by a black gunman targeting white victims, police said.

Police confirmed that Muhammad is also suspected for the murder of a security guard outside Motel 6 in central Fresno on Thursday, but it was still too early to say if the shooting was an act of terrorism.

While police were responding to the scene, a PG&E pickup truck pull up to Fresno Police headquarters on Fresno and M Street and notified police that his passenger had been shot near Mildreda and Franklin avenues.

Muhammad then shot at another person and missed, police said.

Catholic Charities doesn't believe Muhammad has ties to the nonprofit, spokeswoman Teresa Dominguez said.

(CNN) - The Fresno shooting rampage in which police say a black man killed three white men in an alleged hate crime took less than two minutes Tuesday.

Muhammad told his family there was a war going on between blacks and whites in America.

"He was a different kind of boy, he was different from all my kids", Glenestene Taylor said.

The gunman then aimed at a third, killing the 37-year-old on the pavement as he walked with a bag of shopping.

So far this year, there have been more than 17,700 incidents involving guns nationwide and 4,405 fatalities, Gun Violence Archive, a not-for-profit group, said on its website.

Authorities did not publicize his identity as they were chasing possible sightings of Muhammad and other leads in the case, Dyer said.

Court documents also show Muhammad "suffered auditory hallucinations and had at least two prior mental health hospitalizations".

The imam of the Islamic Cultural Center of Fresno says the suspect in a shooting that killed three people was not a member of his center. Police said he yelled "Allahu Akbar", which means God is Great in Arabic and that he posted on Facebook saying he didn't like white people.

Police say two of the victims may have been clients of Catholic Charities, which provides a variety of services for refugees, the homeless and those with disabilities. All three victims were white. "We offer condolences for the victims, we pray for the victims and their families".

The police Chief disclosed that when California police arrested the suspect, officers witnessed him shouting "Allah Akbar".

According to his grandmother, Kori Muhammad changed his name from Kori Taylor to Kori Ali Muhammad when he was between 14 and 16 years old.

The guard, Carl Williams, 25, was shot multiple times. Fulton Street is closed at Divisadero Street as well as several other streets in the area.

Ashlee Wolf of Catholic Charities told the Fresno Bee newspaper (http://bit.ly/2oK6Vzc) that the shooting happened at a bus stop near the charity.

County government buildings were placed on lockdown and residents were urged to shelter in place, according to the newspaper.
