Rachel Dolezal faces tough questions at UJ

"The spectrum that I just mentioned is a privilege spectrum‚ whether it is someone who is light-skinned and classified as black at birth or whether someone is born white and has certain features that would be racialised as black".

In June 2015, Dolezal came to media attention when her Caucasian parents stated publicly that Dolezal is a white woman claiming to be black.

"You pretended to be Black". Her memoir In Full Color was rejected by 30 publishers and the only job offers she's been given have been for reality television or porn. You perpetrated a lie.

"Well, I haven't always openly lived self-identified as black". And, what does she have to say to people who called her a "race faker" and an "ethnic fraud" who misrepresented herself to others? "People were arguing with me and telling me I was more black than white and now people are telling me that I'm more white than black".

"This really brings up that race is a social construct".

Dolezal has claimed that she "was biologically born white to white parents", and compared herself to Caitlyn Jenner, claiming race is "not coded in your DNA" and should be viewed like gender or religion. I can not undo the evils of capitalism simply by pretending to be a millionaire. "I make mistakes." If you're still interested in hearing what Rachel Dolezal has to say, check your local listings to find out what time Dr. Phil airs. "In fact, I didn't try to coin a transracial term, or any of that stuff". When I write about race, I often get people coming back and saying, 'Why are you focused on this?

Dr Phil said people claimed the race-faker conned them. But part of white supremacy is actually never having to acknowledge you're white, freedom from a lot of that because you're the default.

"Well", says Rachel, "but why does it have to just go one way?" The event takes place at the Johannesburg Theatre on Wednesday, 19 April.
