This will be the first time the Giants have been to Kauffman Stadium since Game 7 of the 2014 World Series, where the bad guys ultimately reigned supreme and swiped the crown from our beloved boys in blue. The Giants are also 9-4 in Bumgarner's last 13 Wednesday starts, and 9-4 in Bumgarner's last 13 starts with five days' rest.
It was the second straight great outing for Cain who allowed a run over five innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Whit Merrifield, in his first game of the season, homered in the fourth inning. Hammel was pitching a flawless game through four innings before a Buster Posey single broke up the no-hitter. It appears they will be easing him back into the lineup, playing him at designated hitter on Tuesday.
Hunter Pence got the scoring started for the Giants, driving in Joe Panik on a base hit in the sixth inning.
Nick Hundley doubled before Panik's liner dropped in front of Royals center fielder Lorenzo Cain to give the Giants the lead. Alcides Escobar highlighted his three-hit performance with an RBI single in the ninth inning of Sunday's 1-0 triumph, marking just his third multi-hit effort of the season.
The Royals missed out on potentially ending the series opener against the San Francisco Giants in the 10th inning Tuesday night by virtue of speed.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy immediately came off the bench and challenged the call, alerting the umpiring crew that he wanted a review by placing his hands over his ears like headphones.
The Giants' Matt Cain and the Royals' Jason Hammel waged a nip-and-tuck duel of starters, each taking advantage of double plays and nifty defense to escape sticky situations. He finished with two hits.
