BJP takes jibe on SP-Congress combine on farm loan waiver

The Yogi Adityanath cabinet's decision to waive loans of small and marginal farmers will further strain the government exchequer. He said six AIIMS like hospitals and 25 medical colleges will be started in Uttar Pradesh in the next five years. "Millions of farmers were feeling cheated with the ceiling of Rs 1 lakh".

Surya Pratap Shahi, the Minister for Agriculture, shared with media that as soon as the government won and came into power, they first prepared the list and took this decision in short period of the span. The move will benefit over 2.15 crore farmers, besides 7 lakh others who had secured loans which turned into non-performing assets (NPAs).

In Andhra Pradesh, the state government is already working on waiving off farmers' debt.

In its first meeting on March 18, the state Cabinet led by chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh decided that a group of experts would assess the agricultural debt and propose ways to end the debt in a time-bound manner. During the election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi too had promised loan waiver for farmers if BJP were to form the government in UP.
