Benintendi, Red Sox outslug Blue Jays

Johnson will be making a spot start for the Red Sox tomorrow in place of Eduardo Rodriguez, who is away on paternity leave. Add in the fact that Boston has struggled on the road and that Stroman has had success against the Red Sox in his career, and I think it's a lean towards Toronto here, although I wish the line wasn't this big.

This is a team that reached the American League Championship Series the last two years, a team with the sixth-biggest payroll ($177.8 million) in the game, and a team expected to pose the stiffest challenge to the Red Sox in the AL East.Expectations are already very high here. Toronto went just 3 of 12 with runners in scoring position.

BLUE JAYS KEY TRENDS: The Blue Jays are a mess, dropping 14 of their last 17 games overall and going just 1-6 in their last seven home games. Kevin Pillar had three doubles for Toronto.

In the top of the ninth inning Tuesday night, three outs from his first major-league win, Brian Johnson sat next to Mookie Betts in the Boston Red Sox's dugout and talked about old times together in the minors.

Pillar led off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Kendrys Morales.

The pitching has been solid enough, but with Josh Donaldson on the shelf with a calf injury, the Blue Jays' lineup looks shabby even with names like Jose Bautista, Morales and Troy Tulowitzki still in it.

The Blue Jays have lost four games by one run.

Gonzalez allowed four hits, two of which were erased by double plays with the next batters, and walked one while throwing just 87 pitches. He also had a 1.075 WHIP and 11.2 K/9 rate.

Smoak tied it 3-3, taking Johnson's first-pitch fastball over the left field wall for his second home run of the season to lead off the bottom half of the third.

At St. Petersburg, Fla., Matt Andriese outpitched Michael Fulmer, Tim Beckham hit a two-run homer, and Tampa Bay beat Detroit. Toronto reliever Aaron Loup came on and gave up an RBI single to Sandoval before Dominic Leone recorded the final out. It was a solo shot that increased Boston's lead to 7-4. The Toronto native belted a 1-0 pitch off the facing of the second deck for his first homer of the year. He had six strikeouts.

Taylor made his Major League Baseball debut this season and coming out of the Red Sox bullpen, he has allowed one run, a solo homer, on four hits in 5.2 innings (1.59 ERA and 1.235 WHIP).

In the ninth, Pearce drove in Martin with a single and Carrera followed with a two-run pinch-hit homer. Two seasons as he appeared in Toronto if they can't measures you took the mound for the first time. Announced attendance was 29,281 and the game took three hours 48 minutes to play.

He's working on a four-game hitting streak. Toronto LHP J.A. Happ (left elbow inflammation) was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactive to April 17. Dermody gave up three homers in one inning last Sunday.

The Blue Jays traded catcher Juan Graterol to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Owens appears to be trending in the right direction now, as evidenced by his 0.82 ERA over his two starts for the PawSox this year, but he only pitched more than five innings once in his five starts for the Red Sox last season.
