When you combine the domestic and global gross the film brought in $532.5 million worldwide, which sets a new record beating out the $529 million set by Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in 2015 reports Box Office Mojo.
But to say that the latest installment of the Fast & Furious franchise simply dominated wouldn't do the film (or its kickass cast) very much justice.
Simultaneous release in China has resulted in great advantage for the latest instalment of the "Fast & the Furious" series. The film made an estimated $432.3 million overseas, which lapped the record $316 million that "Jurassic World" made abroad in 2015.
"The Boss Baby" was second this weekend with $16 million in sales between Friday and the close of business Sunday.
That child is the catalyst for the plot of Fate of the Furious.
The Fate of the Furious is now screening in cinemas and features Vin Diesel, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Charlize Theron, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Luke Evans.
"A lot of what drags movies like The Avengers down is the plot, and Fast & Furious isn't trying to compete with those heavy, convoluted storylines".
Those huge worldwide numbers offset the lower than expected domestic box office total for The Fate of the Furious. Globally, Furious 7 launched to $397.7 million (it didn't open in China until a week later). However, the Alec Baldwin-starring animated feature continues to perform well, crossing the $100 million mark domestically with an estimated weekend earning of $15.5 million.
"My phone's blowing up and apparently, #FateOfTheFurious is the biggest global box office opening of all time", he said.
"Maybe next time "Star Wars" should film in Cleveland". The film brought in $100.2 million domestically and also made headlines for its global and worldwide performance.
Also of note, "Kong: Skull Island" brought in an estimated $2.6 million, bringing its domestic totals to more than $160 million.
