"We know Chris Gayle is a very good performer and we know if he can get on a roll than we can utilise Chris in a positive manner".
Gayle's initial approach looked like he wanted to get the monkey off his back with just three runs needed to become the first player in T20 cricket to aggregate 10,000 runs in Twenty20 games. But both of them have won only one match each.
Hours before the start of the game, AB de Villiers announced on Twitter that he would not be playing because of his shoulder injury, while Samuel Badree is also out with niggles and Chris Gayle and Travis Head will replace the duo in the RCB playing XI.
Apart from one match against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS), where their bowling department did a fantastic job, Gujarat's bowlers have struggled to find the rhythm. Was choosing to field a wise move at this point for Suresh Raina despite winning the toss?
Jadeja's deliveries though seemed to have been costly as RCB hit runs off his four overs. He reached his fifty with a huge six over long on off left-arm spinner Shivil Kaushik.
There was no stopping the southpaw, who took his West Indian teammate Dwayne Smith to the cleaners for two massive sixes as RCB crossed the 100-run mark in the 11th over. The team is not being helped by the fact that their overseas all-rounder - Shane Watson - has not done anything of note with bat and ball; the Australian may have a very impressive record in global cricket and in the IPL over the years, but so far this season he has scored at less than a run-a-ball and has leaked runs at 10.30 runs per over. He showed no mercy on the bowlers, dispatching them out of the park on two occasions besides hitting five fours as the visitors milked 35 runs from the final two overs. Head remained unbeaten on 30 of 16, while Jadhav was more destructive: collecting 38 runs off 16 balls. Praveen Kumar, Andrew Tye, Dhawal Kulkarni and Munaf Patel should be saved for the last. It will take a monumental effort from the GL batsmen to gun that RCB total down in the second innings.
