We will be proud to do so on the most meaningful date on our calendar, Jackie Robinson Day, at our Youth Academy in Compton. More than 70 years later, Bowman says Montreal welcomed Robinson during the Hall of Famer's one season with the International League Royals.
It was a day to honor the legacy of No. 42 on anniversary No. 70 of Robinson making his debut with Brooklyn at Ebbets Field - April 15, 1947. According to U.S. News and World Report, the Dodgers will be revealing a bronze statue of Robinson at Dodgers stadium on Saturday.
But people on social media are also finding their own ways to remember and honor him, so here are 10 photos that are flawless for celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. Whites played with and against Whites in the majors. and people of color (including Latino players) who weren't allowed in the White Major Leagues played separately in their own leagues.
He was little CC Sabathia then, a 5-year-old California kid listening to his grandfather regale him with tales about a late, great player for the Brooklyn Dodgers, the baseball legend who starred as No. 42, Jackie Robinson. That's the lowest since 1958.
This year we are going to take a look at the top five players, other than Robinson, who once wore the number 42 either before the celebration began or who did at the time, and were grandfathered in and allowed to keep their number until their retirement from the game. According to USA Today Sports, only 7.1 percent of the current Major League Baseball players are African American.
The drop in diversity in major league baseball is due to a variety of reasons, but there is no denying that socioeconomic barriers remain a significant factor.
Twenty years ago today, baseball retired Robinson's No. 42, in a dramatic announcement madeat Shea Stadium in NY by Commissioner Bud Selig, who was flanked by Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson; and President Bill Clinton.
"I guess we've just got to get the word out more", Hicks said, "tell them how great this sport is and how much fun we have".
"It's not about looking back so much as it is feeling inspired", Sharon Robinson said.
The life-size statue, which sits in the left field reserve area, is the first statue honoring a former player in the history of Dodger Stadium.

It's an understatement. Major League Baseball has 30 teams.
Robinson's widow, Rachel Robinson, as well as his two children, Sharon and David Robinson were also in attendance, and together, the threesome counted down the moment where the blue curtain was dropped at the statue was unveiled to adoring fans and guests. Weighing in at over 700 pounds, the statue will be secured with a steel rod and is said to have three quotes chosen by Robinson's family.
