Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo proud of his 'impressive' Bayern Munich double

Ronaldo, the four-time world player of the year, volleyed Real level at the Allianz Arena early in the second half, then reached his milestone by slotting home the victor 13 minutes from time in the first leg. "That is how ambitious he is".

Yet Real remain at La Liga's summit and with the upper hand in their Champions League quarter-final, proving that even a Ronaldo performing below his best may be enough to win some of the biggest accolades in European football.

But Bayern were outplayed in the second-half and most of Madrid's 23 shots on goal came after the break.

It could have been a higher score and Real captain Sergio Ramos had the ball in the net late on, but the goal was disallowed.

Cristiano Ronaldo rounded on his critics after becoming the first man to score 100 European goals before after ending a six-game Champions League goal drought with a double against Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

It proved a costly miss as Ronaldo swept in an equaliser two minutes into the second half before Bayern's defensive midfielder Javi Martinez picked up two quick cautions to leave the home side a player down for the final half-hour.

"We played a very good first half".

Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied Ronaldo a hat trick with some excellent saves when Madrid were on top against 10 men, and earned some praise from Los Blancos' No. 7.

Chile global Arturo Vidal headed Bayern into a 26th-minute lead but then missed a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

The goals were the 99th and 100th for Ronaldo in European club competition, giving him the milestone almost seven months after he had scored his last Champions League goal in a 2-2 group-stage draw at Borussia Dortmund. Hopefully Real Madrid win and we get through to the semifinals.

He, however, said Bayern still has the chance of progressing ahead of Real Madrid.

"I am very happy", he said.

"You are never going to kill off the tie", Zidane said.

More than half of his strikes have come in the opening 45 minutes of games, with his one and only extra-time goal helping Real clinch the trophy against city rivals Atletico Madrid in 2014.

Zidane did not say whether he will rest Ronaldo for the team's away game at relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon tomorrow in the Spanish league.

Real have lost just one of their 21 Champions League games since the start of last season and so Bayern face a massive task if they're to overturn this deficit. We will suffer in the second leg, Bayern can play the same way away from home.

Heynckes's Bayern thrashed a worn down Barcelona left behind by Guardiola a year earlier 7-0 on aggregate on their way to winning the Champions League.
