Dan was a champion for his family, his community, his team, and his faith.
Steelers owner Dan Rooney holds the Vince Lombardi trophy after the Steelers won Super Bowl XL at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, on February 5, 2006. Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown wrote that Rooney was "One of the most genuine, and humble human beings I've had the pleasure of knowing".
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dan Rooney". The NFL world lost a big one here. Needless to say, his loss impacted many, including current and former members of the New York Giants. It was a touching act of kindness and sportsmanship, and a moment that will forever remind me of the dignity and class with which he lived every day of his wonderful life. From a personal standpoint, I was honored to call him a friend and always appreciated his unwavering support of the Penguins. "Few men have contributed as much to the National Footbal".
In 2000, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and two years later, turned day-to-day control of the Steelers over to his son, Art Rooney II. "We will keep his wife Pat and the entire Rooney family in our prayers and hope they find comfort in knowing that Dan's legacy will forever be kept alive in Canton, Ohio".
