Moreland greeted Erasmo Ramirez with his first homer in a Red Sox uniform in the second inning - after Tampa Bay starter Jake Odorizzi left with left hamstring tightness.
Mitch Moreland hit a two-run single to take the lead, 6-5, and Steve Selsky came in to replace Ramirez on the base paths. The Mets bullpen was outstanding in this game, seven relievers combinng to throw ten innings of scoreless ball after starter Robert Gsellman allowed a career-high eight runs in just 4 2/3 innings, but all's well that ends well for the exhausted but streaking NY Mets.
After playing 133 games at first base for Boston last season, Ramirez has taken the role of DH from David Ortiz, and he is enjoying it.
Star pitcher Sale struck out 12 as the Red Sox beat the Rays 2-1 in Major League Baseball action on Saturday.
Boston ended up sweeping Pittsburgh in three games at Fenway Park after winning the first two games of the season.
- Joe Kelly was very strong in relief of Pomeranz, allowing just one hit over 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Craig Kimbrel picked up his fifth save, pitching a ideal ninth while striking out two. Friday's outing was his shortest, but he still held Boston to one run over 52/3 innings. The ball lifted into left center and bounced off the wall past the glove of Benintendi, allowing Souza and KK to score as Miller dove headfirst into third base to lock down his two-run triple.
Singles by Moreland and Xander Bogaerts were followed by a Pablo Sandoval fielder's choice. Other than a hiccup in the third inning, when the lefty gave up a run, two hits and two walks, the Rays didn't have a prayer. After giving up a double to Benintendi, Mookie Betts hit a little popper to right field that managed to bounce in play and then immediately out of play for an RBI group-rule double.
Rodriguez gave up two of his three runs in the first inning, but struck out eight with four walks over 5 1/3. "He'll be on the DL", Cash said.
"I know for a fact he thrives on the DH spot, that's probably his preference overall", Farrell said via CSN New England. Pomeranz opened the year on the disabled list and returned Tuesday against Baltimore to lead the Red Sox to an 8-1 victory. He's hitting just.133 (4 for 30) with two homers and seven RBIs. Highly touted prospect Jose De Leon, acquired from the Dodgers for second baseman Logan Forsythe over the winter, hasn't pitched yet this season on account of flexor mass discomfort.
Here's how this one went down.
