It's A Boy! April The Giraffe Finally Gives Birth, Internet Celebrates

At birth, April the giraffe's baby boy is already a tall drink of water.

Since a live feed of her enclosure started in February, she has become an internet celebrity.

HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (AP) - April the giraffe gave birth to a male calf Saturday at Animal Adventure park, a privately owned zoo in NY, as fans watched the livestream.

Millions tuned in as April gave birth at 9:53 a.m., Saturday April 15th.

The yet-to-be-named baby is the fourth calf for 15-year-old April.

More than 1.2 million viewers, from around the world viewed the birth in real-time courtesy of Animal Adventure's live stream. Giraffe's go into labor after 15 months of gestation, and an infant giraffe can be up to 150 pounds when it is first born.

"His entrance into the world was unnerving to even those of us who have witnessed animal births previously", Patch said in the statement.

Animal Adventure park is now closed to the public and will open in mid-May.

After the end of the first part of the contest, the park will reveal the top 10 names and voting will begin on those names. The giraffe is bonding with April and Oliver has curiously watched over the pair. The zoo is holding a naming contest, which you can join here.

About 45 minutes after it was born, the calf managed to stand on its legs for the first time despite the fact that the healthy calf was at least one month overdue. Some we expected - others, a surprise!

Interestingly, in a recent update, Jordan Patch was asked if the new baby would be April's last calf.

Clearly protective of her young, April was not impressed.
