Boy wounded in San Bernardino school shooting released from hospital

Karen Smith was the wife of the San Bernardino school shooter.

The memorial outside North Park Elementary grew Wednesday, with Stars of Hope giving encouraging messages.

Security will be tightened, and counselors will be made available for students and staff.

This is the second high profile shooting in San Bernardino in two years. In December 2015, husband and wife Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik shot and killed 14 people and wounded 22 others after ambushing a training event at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino.

Nine-year-old Marissa Perez said she got under a table as soon as she saw the gunman enter her classroom Monday.

Special education teacher Karen Elaine Smith (right) was fatally shot in San Bernardino, California by estranged husband Cedric Anderson, who she had married in January.

Fifty-three year old Cedric Anderson had been arrested four times in the past but never convicted. "We believe the teacher knew who the shooter was", San Bernardino City Unified School District spokeswoman Maria Garcia told KNBC. On Facebook, he posted images of a happy, loving couple enjoying date nights and smiling in selfies.

One of Anderson's girlfriends was granted a restraining order in 2013 after she said he held a pillow over her face, according to court papers.

Two male students, who were injured as Anderson fired at his wife, were transported to hospitals for treatment.

The page also had several photos of his wedding to Smith and their honeymoon among the scenic red rocks of Sedona, Arizona.

San Bernardino police conducted more than 1,500 investigations related to domestic violence in 2016, Lt. Mike Madden said. She said the man was wearing a beige blazer, and said the victim was in her classroom, B-1.

"She thought she had a wonderful husband, but she found out he was not wonderful at all", Sykes told the Los Angeles Times. "He had other motives", Sykes said.

Valles is still struggling with how she's going to break the news of his teacher's death to him. She did not elaborate further.

"When she walked into a room she would light up the room", Alexander said. Ron Maass said at a news conference that his firearm, a.357 revolver, wasn't visible when he went to the school.

Two students sitting nearby her were also hit by gunfire. Anderson entered the classroom "without saying anything" before he opened fire and then turned the gun on himself, Burguan said.

Rachel Valles, whose 8-year-old son Ethan was a student in Smith's class, said the boy had struggled with reading and math until he started in Smith's class in August.

The superintendent also said he was called by U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and she told him her department stood ready to provide support.
