Similar perhaps, but not wholly unique in the same vein.
But publisher Nicalis has since announced a partnership with Headup Games to bring Binding of Isaac Afterbirth+ to Europe in Q2 2017. It's also more than those two things-nobody's ever huddled around a Gameboy for multiplayer action.
Breath of the Wild, which launched alongside the Switch on March 3, also set internal records at Nintendo.
Citing numbers from NPD (so we're talking North America here), the Switch sold over 906,000 consoles in March, with Breath of the Wild moving 925,000+ copies for Switch and nearly 460,000 for Wii U-also not a bad number, considering that the (roughly ten million) Wii U owners are mostly Nintendo diehards who were likely to buy a Switch anyway. The other consoles also launched near a holiday time where spending $300 was easy to justify, instead of launching in March.
For those that have been waiting anxiously for new Nintendo Switch units to be available, Nintendo's announcement might not be surprising.
"Nintendo always strives to offer consumers something fun, new and different", said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America's President and COO. That is not just marketing speak.
In second place, the PlayStation 4 outsold the Xbox One in March, making it the fifth month in a row. We may have to figure out a new term to apply to a system seller as hot as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, though. The company cited data from NPD Group, an industry tracker.
Even Super Mario 64-one of only two games that launched with the Nintendo 64 in the U.S. in 1996-didn't outsell its own console hardware in its debut (The best numbers we could find suggest 300,000 Super Mario 64 cartridges sold for 350,000 Nintendo 64 consoles in the system's opening weekend). The reason was that people bought a limited edition of the game to collect, and another version on the console. Many retailers were sold out during launch so the numbers could have been higher if Nintendo anticipated the high demand. We managed to get our hands on one and will have a full review soon, but it took standing outside of a Toys R Us store location before it opened to secure it.
