There was a report on ESPN Mexico late on Monday that the FMF is seeking to host the opening game of the 2026 World Cup at Estadio Azteca, should the bid be accepted, although U.S. Soccer Sunil Gulati president said earlier in the day that no decision had been made over which country would get that honor.
"For the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, and the entire Mexican soccer family, it is a source of pride to be candidates, along with the United States and Canada, to host the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Mexican Football Federation President Decio de Maria said through a press release.
An agreement between the three CONCACAF nations would see the USA host 75% of the 80-game, 48-team tournament, with both Canada and Mexico hosting 10 fixtures each.
The federations of Canada, Mexico and the United States announced on Saturday that their respective presidents will make an "historic announcement" at One World Observatory atop the One World Trade Center in downtown New York City.
Instead of decrying this as a bunch of "globalists" invading America with the sport of soccer, Trump is reportedly "pleased" that these three countries have formed an alliance that could bring the world's biggest soccer tournament back to North America for the first time since the US hosted it in 1994.
While the bid is being branded as being from all three countries, it clearly favours the United States. In an unprecedented investment, Qatar is projected to spend more than $200 billion for the 2022 World Cup.
"I think it's safe to say both countries would have liked to host more".
Mexico also have experience in this area, though, having hosted it in 1970 and 1986, while Canada hosted the 2015 Women's World Cup.
"Before this conference is over we will sign a memorandum of understanding between the three of our countries, signifying we will bid together".
Federation Internationale de Football Association bidding rules have made the North American bid a strong favorite to win because Europe and Asia can not present a candidate.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first in an expanded format. South America (Brazil) hosted in 2014, and Africa (South Africa) four years before that.
The 2002 World Cup is the only other tournament to be played in multiple countries (Japan and South Korea).
US Soccer president Sunil Gulati.
The U.S. participated in the 2018 and 2022 bidding contest but lost in a hotly disputed vote that sparked corruption investigations. "This will be an extraordinarily successful World Cup on financial and economic grounds, and that's critical because most of FIFA's revenues come from one event".
"The United States, Mexico and Canada have individually demonstrated their exceptional abilities to host world-class events", added Gulati.
"Teams who qualify for a World Cup need to have access to the country, otherwise there is no World Cup", Infantino said.
