Eight Karnataka students drown off Maharashtra coast

Three more students were drowning, but they were saved by local fishermen.

The deceased, five boys and three girls, were part of a group of 47 students.

Eight people including 7 students of Belgaum's Engineering College were today drowned in the sea off the Wairy beach in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra during a college picnic.

Maratha Engineering College Principal Dr. V Udipi said the 50 students "went without permission" and that he was going to the spot with an ambulance, ANI reported. "But it was too late", the police said. One of the students is in serious condition and undergoing treatment at Malvan hospital, said Sindhudurg Police Control official Ravindra Ghirkar.

The incident occurred around the noon at Vayri, a coastal hamlet near Malvan town in the Konkan region of the state. Around 30 of them ventured to take a swim in the sea.

In a similar tragedy, 13 students from a Pune college, who were on a picnic, had drowned off the Murud beach near Mumbai in February a year ago.

The water near coast at Wairy is deep and authorities caution tourists against entering the waters especially during high tides. Eight of them, including two girls, drowned while three were rescued.
