Community Mourns As New Information On San Bernardino School Shooting Suspect Emerges

A 7 p.m. candlelight vigil will be held at North Park Elementary Tuesday. He and the boy who died were standing behind their special-education teacher, Karen Elaine Smith.

"The first week after a woman makes the courageous decision to leave an abusive relationship is often the most unsafe week of her life", said Bryan Pacheco of Safe Horizon, an organization that supports victims of domestic violence. "I would like you to work with your young child to keep things as normal as possible", Dale Marsden, superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District, said. I can't imagine what these families are going through and especially these kids. "Jonathan loved to give hugs", said school Principal Yadira Downing.

The couple had married in January and separated in mid-March, with Smith leaving to stay with family, Burguan said.

"By all accounts, Jonathan was a happy and friendly child", Burguan said.

Eight-year-old Jonathan Martinez passed away at Loma Linda University Medical Center after being airlifted from the school; the other student who was struck, a 9-year-old boy, is now listed in stable condition at the hospital.

Jonathan died. The 9-year-old survived and was in stable condition, San Bernardino Police Chief Jarrod Burguan told reporters on Tuesday.

Smith and Anderson had been married for just two months when she moved out of her house in Riverside, spurred by his accusations that she had been unfaithful to him, Burguan said.

The boy was "up and watching cartoons" and is expected to make a full recovery.

Relatives of a school teacher shot dead by her husband in a San Bernardino, California, classroom have told investigators the slaying capped a brief, turbulent marriage and breakup marked by accusations of infidelity and threats, police said on Tuesday.

Burguan said Anderson, who had shown his identification to school employees in the front office before being allowed in to her class unescorted, kept his weapon concealed until opening fire without saying a word.

Police said Anderson used a.357 revolver and reloaded at least once during the attack.

"Well he began to pick on my daughter and talk down to her and here they had dated for four years and after about three weeks my husband and I decided you need to get away from him".

Smith resisted moving back in with Anderson, but "didn't necessarily take those threats serious", Burguan said. "He started reading and doing long math", Valles said. "She was just the embodiment of reasonableness and conservatism godliness".

Mondays shootings at the North Park Elementary School has brought people together for healing just as the city was recovering from the mass killings at the Inland Regional Center 16 months earlier.

One girl described Smith as a "nice" teacher who would "help people that needed help". The school district plans on providing grief counseling for the children and administration.

She is also a music lover who has composed the lyrics and notes to a song.

"Karen was a wonderful person, a wonderful teacher and a great friend", a fellow teacher said.
