The Texas Rangers couldn't muster a hit against James Paxton for 5 1/3 innings on Saturday at Safeco Field.
The Texas Rangers have activated Andrew Cashner from the 10-day disabled list for his first start of the season against the Seattle Mariners and optioned right-hander Nick Martinez to Triple-A Round Rock.
RANGERS KEY TRENDS: The Rangers are now 1-4 in their last five games in Seattle and 1-4 in their last four games versus the Mariners after losing last night. All players and coaches on both teams wore the number, honoring Jackie Robinson.
Runs have been hard to come by for the Seattle Mariners this season, but they managed just enough Friday to help Felix Hernandez to his first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Texas.
SEATTLE (AP) - James Paxton is off to a record-setting start for the Seattle Mariners.
Hernandez retired the first seven Rangers before Joey Gallo punched an 0-2 curve over Dyson's head in center for a one-out double in the third inning. Seattle posted a shutout in its home opener but allowed a total of 17 runs in back-to-back losses to Houston before evening its record on its nine-game homestand at 2-2. "The confidence - he's fearless".
"Just being really aggressive", Paxton said. "He's doing the strengthening exercises and stuff, I have not seen him run or got any update on that today".
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when Seattle got a two-run single from Kyle Seager and Taylor Motter's three-run homer.
MARINERS KEY TRENDS: The Mariners are 3-10 in their last 13 games overall dating back to last season and are just 3-10 in their last 13 games against division rivals as well. Nomar Mazara plated the lone run for Texas, giving him three RBIs in his last two games. Paxton was phenomenal all night and he's been phenomenal all season. Upon review, though, the ball clearly hit the yellow line at the top of the fence that is still in play. But Gallo also started a pair of double plays in the first two innings with good reactions at third base. Shortstop Elvis Andrus singled to left on a 1-2 count and moved to third base on a stolen base and wild pitch, but he was stranded there when Jonathan Lucroy grounded out to end the game.
"We needed it right there", Paxton said. "That was a big run to keep off the board, and it kind of got our boys going".
Andrew Cashner (0-1) lost in his first start since signing with Texas as a free agent.
Cashner is expected to be activated from the disabled list and make his debut for the Rangers on Saturday. And in the fourth, after Nelson Cruz's two-out solo homer, he loaded the bases before striking out Mike Zunino. "That's good for me". The Rangers ran into a very good young pitcher pitching like a great young pitcher.
