There's not much, and Westbrook again left the National Basketball Association speechless after collecting his 41st triple-double of 2016-17, tying him with Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson for the most ever in a single season.
"It's one of those nights, a special night, and something I definitely will never forget", Westbrook said. The next four games for Oklahoma City are on the road before closing out the regular season at home on April 12.
Minutes into the third period he notched his 10th rebound and within seconds had delivered a 10th assist on Taj Gibson's basket that put the Thunder up 67-42. Naturally, the crowd serenaded him with some MVP chants. I hate the narrative where players don't need rest or they shouldn't rest if given the opportunity, but Russell Westbrook has played every game this season.
"I was in shock, honestly, man. Kind of just sitting there and embracing the moment", he said.
According to Thunder Digest, Westbrook needs to average just about four rebounds and six assists per game to complete the season averaging a triple-double.
"It's something I could never have dreams of growing up", said Westbrook, who can break the record Robertson set in the 1961-62 season on Wednesday night against the Grizzlies in Memphis. Jason Kidd was voted Eastern Conference Coach of the Month after leading the Bucks to a 14-4 record in March, and though they lost to Dallas on Sunday, their recent success gained the Thunder's full attention.
Since the All-Star break, Westbrook is averaging just one fewer point than minute played, as he is posting 34.3 points per game and even improved perhaps the one weakness in his game.
Huge ovation for Westbrook's 41st triple-double.
Westbrook's 12 points Tuesday were his fewest of the season, which stood in contrast to the 57 he scored Wednesday against the Magic, setting a new National Basketball Association standard for most points ever in a triple-double. The Rockets are second to Golden State in scoring, at better than 115 points per game.
Westbrook had 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists at halftime to help Oklahoma City (44-33) take a 63-39 lead.
A triple-double is the achievement of double-digit totals in three of the five key statistical categories - points, assists, rebounds, blocks and steals - and is regarded as a barometer of all-round versatility.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook (0) has stepped up as a leader following Kevin Durant's departure.
Asked for his thoughts about the possibility of tying Robertson's long-standing mark on Tuesday, Westbrook replied: "We gotta win". Westbrook also made nine of 12 free throw attempts, including two that sealed the Thunder's win with less than a second remaining. The Thunder has a 31-9 record when he gets a triple-double and a 12-24 mark when he doesn't. Shattering Robertson's record would just be a personal accomplishment.
