Pompeo's House seat remains in Republican hands

From the President to a former Kansas congressman, a variety of people reacted to Estes win on social media. Ted Cruz, in the flesh, at a rally for Mr. Estes. GOP congressional candidate in the 4th district Ron Estes votes at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Tuesday, April 11, 2017, in Wichita, Kan.

Trump himself triggered the special election by naming then-Rep.

So while Estes is the victor, his Democratic opponent, James Thompson, can also claim some victory (but no seat in Congress).

Estes did, in fact, win the election for the House seat vacated by Mike Pompeo, who left to become Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director.

Republicans maintain a tight hold on the district, which voted for Trump by 27 points in last year's presidential election and voted for Mitt Romney by eight points back in 2012. Estes beat out Democratic lawyer James Thompson, who garnered 46 percent of the vote.

"Republicans nationally should be very anxious", said Bob Beatty, a Washburn University political scientist.

The last Democrat to hold the Kansas 4th congressional district seat was Dan Glickman, who served nine terms before becoming agriculture secretary in 1995.

Three Democrats - Parnell, Alexis Frank and Les Murphy - are running in their party's May 2 primary. Gov. Sam Brownback was vastly unpopular in the state because of budget problems - and his state treasurer was the Republican candidate in this U.S. House race. Brownback also refused to expand the Medicaid health program for the poor.

"I can't stand Brownback", she said as she left her polling site in Belle Plaine.

David Carron, a 50-year-old Republican from Belle Plaine, showed up to vote in his Army uniform. "I finally did. I realized this was important".

From Wichita, Kansas to Roswell, Georgia - If Democrats have any hopes of recapturing The House of Representatives in 2018 they will need to reconnect with rural America. The district has been hard hit by the downturn in the agricultural economy and the loss of hundreds of well-paying, blue-collar jobs in aircraft manufacturing plants.

Trump won 60 percent of the votes cast in the congressional district that includes the state's largest city of Wichita. As Sean Trende wrote on Tuesday: "Special elections in 2004 saw Democrats win deep-red seats such as South Dakota's At-Large seat and Kentucky's 6th District, yet the general elections were a disappointment for the party (to say the least)". Trump had carried Sedgwick county by more than 18 percentage points.

Thompson's strength headed into the final days of the Kansas special election stunned Republicans and forced national GOP officials to make a major, last-minute effort to help their nominee.

Estes claimed that the close election was proof that no Republican seat is safe, and vowed to campaign to retain his seat in 2018.

Estes defeated Democrat Jim Thompson, a civil rights attorney and army veteran, and Libertarian Chris Rockhold.

Stay on topic - This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand. On Monday, Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of SC, who shouted "You Lie!" at President Barack Obama during a 2009 health care speech, heard chants of the same phrase at a town hall from constituents angry about health care and his voting record on violence against women.
