Mark Cuban: Adam Silver nixed Mavericks' plan to actually play Tony Romo

As it turns out, Cuban lobbied for Romo to get some on-court time but National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver told him the 1-day contract would not be honored, effectively crushing the idea to have Romo play against the Nuggets. (He hasn't played competitive basketball since high school).

Ever since walking away from chances to play football to embark on a broadcasting career, Tony Romo has avoided a lot of talk about his Cowboys career.

He also addressed the Dallas faithful prior to tipoff. "It's a little embarrasing, but I'll tell you what, I'm a very lucky guy".

Romo then took the microphone and delivered a short speech to the crowd and ended it by saying "thank you, Dallas".

Romo, 36, retired from the National Football League on April 4 following 13 seasons with the Cowboys.

Romo's high school coach Steve Berezowitz described the retired quarterback as an all-around player.

Cuban said the National Basketball Association nixed the idea of Romo actually playing.

There has been some criticism of the Mavericks for how they chose to honor Romo.

So let's relive, via Twitter, how the whole Romo day went down.

But one former Maverick knows Romo's basketball abilities better than most.

"Standing here today I feel a little bit embarrassed, to be honest", Romo said.

"At first I was feeling I didn't deserve any of this". "I can't get into specific details at this time, but encourage fans to be in their seats when warmups begin".

Butler said that Romo's overall skills in many sports is indicative of his athletic talents. "He's a great competitor, victor and plays hurt, the whole thing".

Romo was introduced with the team as the "sixth" starter, to the cheers of a crowd that included Jason Garrett, Scott Linehan, Jerry Jones's wife Gene, and a dozen former Cowboys teammates, including Ezekiel Elliott and Jason Witten. I have checked, and there is no truth to the rumor that the Mavericks took Romo to McDonald's after the game for a Happy Meal, or that they officially waived Romo and gave Dak Prescott a four-year contract.

The early word is Romo isn't going to play in the game, but the hope is Dallas fans will have the opportunity to appreciate him one more time before he ventures off into the sunset and moves on to his new life in the broadcasting booth.

"There is a circus surrounding this because everybody wants to get a glimpse", Carlisle said.

Back in 2015, Rodgers offered up admiration for Romo's game before their playoff showdown.

The Mavs will end their season Wednesday night, starting at 7, at the FedEx Forum in Memphis against the Grizzlies. The Nuggets (39-42) shot 48.8 percent from the field, made 18-of-42 baskets from 3-point range while holding the Mavs to 39.8 percent shooting.
