Iran's Rouhani condemns United States attack on Syria, chides Gulf Arabs

US President Donald Trump is discussing with members of his administration the possibility of introducing sanctions against Russian Federation and Iran for supporting the Syrian government, US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Sunday. "If you look at his actions, if you look at his situation, it's going to be hard to see a government that's peaceful and stable with Assad".
Thursday's strike "was related exclusively to the most recent horrific use of chemical weapons", Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said U.S. President Donald Trump was discussing with members of his administration the possibility of sanctioning Russian Federation and Iran for supporting the Syrian government. The change in direction comes in response to reports that Assad used chemical weapons against civilians, which President Trump said had crossed a line with him. The goal of the attack was to send a message to Syrian President Bashar Assad and its ally Russian Federation that the USA wouldn't tolerate the use of chemical weapons, he continued.
Sir Michael's comments came after Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson pulled out of a Moscow visit hours before he was due to fly.
Writing in the Sunday Times, Sir Michael reiterated his support for the US's action against Assad's brutal regime.
When Wallace asked what the United States will do if Russia defends its interests in Syria, mentioning Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev's comments Friday that the USA missile strike in Syria put the two countries "on the verge of a military clash", McMaster stood firm on his position that Russia is "part of the problem" and should become "part of the solution".
"A political solution is going to have to happen but we know that there is not any sort of option where a political solution is going to happen with Assad at the head of the regime", she said.
"We are prepared to do more", he said.
Reluctant to put significant troops on the ground in Syria, the United States has struggled for years to prevent Assad from strengthening his hold on power.
US-backed rebels groups have long pleaded for more American intervention and complained that Washington has fought only IS.
Russian Federation and Iran have provided Mr Assad with critical military support in his war against rebel groups fighting to topple him. Reluctant to put significant troops on the ground in Syria, the USA for years has struggled to prevent Assad from strengthening his hold on power.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Sunday blamed Russia's inaction for helping fuel a deadly poison gas attack against Syrian civilians last week, saying Moscow failed to carry out a 2013 agreement to secure and destroy chemical weapons in Syria.
