"For those of us who came into this league in the past 30 years, people like Dan Rooney and his family and the Maras, who we are fortunate to partner with, have shown the way, from what the NFL was founded upon to what it is that we all want it to be".
By 1969, Dan Rooney had taken over the day-to-day running of the Steelers and it was his decision to bring in Pro Football Hall-of-Fame coach Chuck Noll, that made the franchise one of, if not the most recognized franchise in the history of the NFL.
Rooney oversaw six championships for a team that hadn't appeared in a title game prior to his taking over. The emblem features the Steelers logo with "Dan Rooney 1932-2017" around it. It has been incredibly beneficial for many minority candidates, including current Browns coach Hue Jackson as well as Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.
Former President Barack Obama named Rooney the United States Ambassador to Ireland during his term and he admitted Rooney surpassed his expectations in the role.
"Mr. Rooney loved the National Football League and he loved his country, and when called upon by President Barack Obama to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, he took leave of one to serve the other, and he did so brilliantly".
The news of the passing of Dan Rooney rose many reactions both inside and outside of football. Cowher had the following to say about Rooney on Twitter: "RIP Dan Rooney".
Washington Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl, former bishop of Pittsburgh, described Rooney as a "champion for his family, his community, his team and his faith". "You motivated me not only to excel on the field but also in life". Mr. Rooney was a great man and true leader who always put others before himself.
