Funeral Arrangements Set For Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney

GOLDMAN: In 1933, Art Rooney's new NFL team in Pittsburgh signed one of only two black players in the league. The Steelers announced Mr. Rooney died Thursday, Apr. 13, 2017. No further details were immediately available. "Michelle and I offer our condolences to the Rooney family, some of the most gracious and thoughtful people we know - even as we celebrate the life of Dan Rooney: a championship-caliber good man".

He was a powerful force within the league. He was a key figure in labor negotiations and was a close adviser to three National Football League commissioners.

Rooney, the son of Steelers founding owner Art Rooney, was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

For decades Rooney took the team his father founded and guided it to the very heights of the NFL, winning a league-best six Super Bowls. "Personally, I'll always be grateful for the guidance and friendship he provided to me over the years". "He would let the players take care of me".

Mr Rooney was co-founder of the Ireland Funds, which helped fund peace and reconciliation projects.

"We are not here today to celebrate statistics", Rooney said on the day he was enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

"When you talk about the "Rooney Rule", and giving everyone a chance to interview for these jobs that's a credit to Mr. Rooney and his incredible legacy". His work with the Irish-American charities was noticed by the former president and in 2009, Rooney became the American ambassador to Ireland until his resignation in 2012.
