China, Russia warn against fuelling North Korea tensions

Despite reports that Washington is considering military action if the North goes ahead with another nuclear test, the vice-foreign minister did not rule out the possibility of a test in the near future.

But Trump is an unpredictable player, Sue Mi Terry, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst who specializes in North Korea, told the Los Angeles Times.

Trump has sent an aircraft carrier-led strike group to the Korean peninsula to press his point, one of a series of measures that indicate his willingness to shake up foreign policy strategy.

"Now we are comparing Trump's policy toward [North Korea] with the former administration's and we have concluded that it's becoming more vicious and more aggressive", Han told the Associated Press. "We've got a powerful nuclear deterrent already in our hands and we certainly will not keep our arms crossed in the face of a USA pre-emptive strike".

Amid regional "military hysteria", North Korea has marked the 105th birth anniversary of its founding leader Kim Il-sung with a military parade in Pyongyang, where it for the first time publicly showcased its submarine-launched ballistic missiles as well as what appears to be a new type of ICBM.

The U.S. has threatened force before, but the likelihood of escalation has kept it from following through.

Meanwhile, senior USA intelligence officials told NBC News that America will not hesitate to launch a preemptive strike against North Korea if it was determined that the country is following through with a nuclear weapons test.

North Koreans offer flowers in front of a mural of late leaders Kim Il Sung, left, and Kim Jong Il on Friday, April 14, 2017, in Pyongyang, North Korea.

China is North Korea's lone major ally but has spoken out against North Korea's missile and nuclear tests and supported United Nations sanctions.

Weapons analysts said they believed some of the missiles on display were new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

"We call on all parties to refrain from provoking and threatening each other, whether in words or actions, and not let the situation get to an irreversible and unmanageable stage", said Mr Wang.

The US navy nuclear-powered USS Carl Vinson strike group is heading into the area, and North Korea has slammed the US for bringing nuclear capabilities into the region. Amid growing tensions with the US President Donald Trump who promised to "take care" of North Korea, the communist officials told foreign journalists on Tuesday that a "big and important event" is expected to take place.

Washington has been concerned by North Korea's nuclear tests, which Pyongyang believes act as deterrence against a potential invasion by the US or South Korea.

China, North Korea's sole major ally and neighbor which nevertheless opposes its weapons program, on Friday again called for talks to defuse the crisis.

Air China, the only Chinese airline with regular flights to North Korea, has cancelled some flights between Beijing and Pyongyang based on their ticket sales situation, reported China News Service yesterday.
