Vegas Golden Knights tab Gallant as their first coach

Expected to be named head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights, Gerard Gallant led the Florida Panthers to their franchise-best season past year. It must select one player from each team to fill a roster of at least 14 forwards, nine defensemen and three goalies, with a minimum of 20 players under contract for the 2017-18 season.

Will that mean Gerard Gallant will change National Hockey League addresses from the Sunshine State to Sin City in less than one season?

Prior his time with Florida, Gallant also coached the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 53-year-old Gallant has a record of 152-140-4-31 (won-lost-overtime losses-shootout losses) as an National Hockey League head coach with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers.

GM George McPhee is a smart hockey man, and he knows it will take some time to turn a nothing team into a victor, and continuity in coaching is an important aspect of that stretch. The optics of the entire situation were brutal, with a photo making the rounds of Gallant waiting at the loading docks of the PNC Arena in Raleigh as the team bus made its way to the airport. The Panthers had a decent, mediocre record of 11-10-1 when Gallant was sacked, and the team failed to improve after his dismissal. He guided the Panthers to franchise records in wins (47) and points (103) during the 2015-16 season, a campaign in which he was a finalist for the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year.

Foley: Coach will be flexible, responsive to the over teams needs are. Florida went 24-26-10 under Rowe and ended up finishing 23rd overall in the league.

It will not be an easy task for Vegas' new bench boss, as most inaugural coaches do not last very long.

And now it appears that same man - Gallant - could end up in Vegas.
