US comedian Charlie Murphy dies of leukaemia aged 57

According to Charlie's manager, he died from leukemia Wednesday morning in a NYC hospital. He also worked as a standup comedian in his own right, having performed at Etobicoke's Woodbine Concert Hall just a year ago.

The Chappelle's Show star's family released a statement regarding Murphy's passing after the news was confirmed.

He was perhaps best-known for his appearances on Dave Chappelle's Comedy Central show.

"Our hearts are heavy with the loss today of our son, brother, father, uncle and friend Charlie", the statement reads.

He also appeared in front of the camera for many movie and TV roles outside of his work with Chappelle, including recurring gigs on "Are We There Yet?" and "The Boondocks", and had a lengthy touring career as a stand-up comic as well.

Thank you for not only being a friend but for believing in me when I was young in this comedy game. "We respectfully ask for privacy during this time of great loss for all of us". "I took it as a personal crusade until they were like 'You're a little overzealous in how you're performing your job.' So that's how I ended up not doing [security] anymore", Murphy said.

Poking fun at his accomplished big bro, he added, "I wish he would get famous because people could see this great impression that I do".

Chris Rock said: 'We just lost one of the funniest most real brothers of all time'. He also appeared alongside Ice Cube in "The Player's Club", which the rapper wrote and directed. Always made me laugh.

"Damn I loved Charlie Murphy".
