Trump reverses himself on 4 campaign positions in just 1 day

Tillerson gave a similar assessment during a press conference with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, after meeting at the Kremlin with Vladimir Putin for almost two hours Wednesday. He labeled Syrian President Bashar Assad a "butcher", a week after ordering a military strike that he once criticized Barack Obama for contemplating.

"I took such heat, when I said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was obsolete". The department is also studying trade abuses and their effect on USA trade deficits. "We'll see whether or not he does", Trump said.

MARTIN: So key to this is China's help with North Korea which is an urgent threat. He promised to heavily tax Chinese goods coming into the country.

"They're not currency manipulators", Trump said flatly in the interview. But why is Trump so willing to reverse course with China?

US stock futures fell Thursday and European and Asian shares declined after Donald Trump said the dollar was getting "too strong". "I think we had a very good chemistry together", he said.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, president Trump said he would like to see U.S. interest rates stay low and that the dollar was "getting too strong" and would eventually hurt the economy.

"They're not currency manipulators", he told The Wall Street Journal. In the Journal interview, Trump also reversed his campaign policy on the federal Export-Import Bank, which insures foreign purchases of USA goods, saying he now supports the institution because it helps small companies.

The dollar also sank against the offshore Chinese yuan after Trump's comments. Trump said that any move to attach the designation could hamper China-U.S. relations.

The U-turn in the president's stance comes mere days after Trump and China's President Xi's first big meeting. But previous presidents have often remarked that the world looks a lot different from the Oval Office than from a campaign rally. We don't know exactly what Xi promised to do on North Korea, but we actually may find out very soon if North Korea conducts a sixth nuclear test which is something experts are concerned could happen very soon.

While U.S. and global politics have consumed investors' attention this week, a raft of Asian economic data may share some of the spotlight on Thursday. A former president of Goldman Sachs and a registered Democrat, Cohn has an ideology that completely counters that of Steve Bannon, the president's campaign architect who has pushed for an anti-China, anti-globalist agenda.

In Moscow Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed the Trump administration's foreign policy as "ambiguous and contradictory" while NATO's Stoltenberg praised it. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond was also lower at 2.888 percent.

But now, Trump is saying something very different. "It's no longer obsolete", Trump said.

Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the development "bodes well for cooperation between the USA and China".

"Having a good relationship with Russian Federation is a good thing, not a bad thing".
