REX TILLERSON, U.S. Secretary of State: The current state of U.S. -Russia relations is at a low point. Russia's alleged meddling in the US presidential election also hovered over the first face-to-face encounter between Putin and a Trump administration Cabinet member.
The US on Friday carried out a missile strike on a Syrian airfield in retaliation for a "barbaric" deadly chemical attack on civilians that he blamed on the country's strongman President Bashar al-Assad.
Earlier in an interview broadcast on Wednesday before the meeting with Tillerson, Putin said that mutual trust between Russian Federation and the United States, especially on the military level, had eroded in the first few months of Trump's presidency. "I like to think they didn't know". How that occurs, we leave that to the process going forward.
The result: not only no warm up in relations between the two superpowers, but, as Tillerson put it, "a low level of trust between our countries", a relation that "the world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have".
The two sides spoke of the low-level of trust between them and the US, noting it's an unacceptable state of strain between the world's two biggest nuclear powers.
The White House wants to see Russian Federation drop its support for Assad, whom Trump labelled a "butcher".
"There is absolutely no doubt that Daesh must be fought and destroyed", Kalın said, adding that this monster had already inflicted more pain and terror than it should have been allowed.
Ties between Russian Federation and the USA have been strained in recent days, with Moscow attacking America's "primitive and loutish" rhetoric over Syria.
"There is a low level of trust between our two countries", Tillerson said candidly.
Not long before Mr. Trump spoke, Russian Federation vetoed a Western-backed United Nations resolution that would have condemned the chemical weapons attack and demanded a speedy investigation.
He said working groups would be established to improve U.S. "They want to use it as an umbrella for the terrorists", Assad said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov agreed there were many problems, but stressed that Moscow was open to dialogue with the USA in all different areas. There were no signs that would support the statement, the allegation that chemical agents were used there at all.
The document also urged the Syrian government to comply with recommendations of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Fact Finding Mission and the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism (JIM) and provide access to the military bases from which strikes against Khan Shaykhun could be carried out.
