Trump hails 'tremendous progress' with Chinese leader Xi

USA officials said the two sides agreed to increase cooperation on trying to get North Korea's to abandon its nuclear weapons program, and China acknowledged the need for more balanced trade with the U.S.

As for the US trade deficit with China, another focus of the summit, the two leaders agreed to a 100-day plan for trade talks aimed at reducing the deficit, but they failed to give specifics.

President Donald Trump had predicted a "very difficult" meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"We have made tremendous progress in our relationship with China", Trump said that day, adding that he believes the two countries can resolve their differences through more talks.

The U.S. administration's first recourse is very likely to be economic - pushing China to crack down on Chinese banks and companies said to provide North Korea access to the global financial system.

Trump has repeatedly complained that China is not doing enough to rein in North Korea's nuclear program, but he already appears close to giving up on the idea of pushing Beijing to push Pyongyang.

In a possible harbinger of the kind of punishments Washington could inflict, a leading Chinese telecoms company, ZTE, was fined almost USD900 million in March for shipping sensitive US -made technology to Iran in violation of USA sanctions.

"For President Xi, this will be embarrassing internationally because in so many settings and so many venues China has condemned the United States for unilateral military action in the past, and this is certainly a unilateral action, " he said.

The United States and China produce the most carbon emissions of any countries, and climate change was a key point of cooperation under the Obama administration.

For its part, the North test-launched a ballistic missile just ahead of the Trump-Xi meeting and has been rumoured to be preparing for a possible nuclear test. The U.S. cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base on the first day of the summit probably surprised Xi.

Speaking alongside Trump, Xi said the two delegations discussed important topics and established a good friendship and working relationship.

"This is a rogue regime that is now a nuclear-capable regime, and President Xi and President Trump agreed that that is unacceptable, that what must happen is the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", he said. "I believe lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away". "For the peace and stability of the world, we will also fulfill our historical responsibility". U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the Chinese had expressed an interest in reducing China's trade surplus as a way of controlling their own inflation. But for the most part, the Russia-backed Syria regime has left the USA coalition to conduct operations as the two sides focus on different foes in the tangled conflict.

In a statement, Trump spokeswoman Lindsay Walters dismissed reports of a dysfunctional administration on the verge of a makeover as "a completely false story". According to USA sources, Xi expressed to Trump his understanding for the attack. (US) has to turn the situation in the Middle East and Asia even more chaotic ... and has to cut (President Xi's) one-belt, one-road initiative alive!

He also said the U.S. He's also criticized China for grabbing jobs that could otherwise go to Americans.

Within hours, Russian Federation reportedly sent its most advanced Black Sea frigate into the Eastern Mediterranean, towards the destroyers USS Ross and USS Porter.

The defining image of the summit will be Xi and his wife being serenaded by the Kushner kids - fitting, because the Kushner family seems to be running the show.
