Ranked player commits to Clemson

Thomas joins five-star quarterback commit Trevor Lawrence of Cartersville (Ga.) on the Tigers' commit board, along with four-star defensive end Justin Mascoll of Snellville (Ga.), four-star wideout Derion Kendrick of Rock Hill, four-star linebacker Mike Jones Jr. of Bradenton (Fla.), three-star linebacker Jake Venables of Central and three-star defensive tackle Josh Belk of Richburg.

The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Thomas, who plays at IMG Academy in Florida, is a SC native and was expected to pick between the Gamecocks and Tigers among his dozens of offers. But the main reason I chose Clemson is because I want to be a part of something special. The Tigers are also hosting the nation's No.3 ranked player on campus for the spring game in, five-star running back, Zamir White.

Thomas' commitment is another huge win for Dabo Swinney and his staff on the recruiting trail, and arguably the biggest in Swinney's nine years as Clemson coach. I knew in my heart this is where I wanted to be, and I know it's the right decision.

For Thomas the decision to choose the Tigers over instate rival SC boiled down to one thing - the opportunity to win championships.

Thomas had never publicly stated a preference, and many thought Columbia's proximity to Florence and the Thomas family worked in USC's favor.

Thomas' recruitment took a dramatic turn in recent days. To the U.S.C. staff and fans - Thank you! Thomas wrote. "They were all so good to me and I will always be grateful for all the love they have shown me and the family and I wish them the best".

Thomas is considered a great pass rusher off the edge.

"I like to think I am like Vic Beasley".

Thomas gives Clemson seven commitments for the 2018 class.

Thomas is the second overall No. 1-ranked prospect from the Palmetto State in ESPN's 13 years of rankings, joining Jadeveon Clowney (2011).
