Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday unequivocally denied that the Kremlin tried to influence the 2016 US presidential election.
Stephanopoulos wasted no time with niceties, jumping into Putin's "read my lips" denial that his government interfered in the recent US presidential election. I expect that it will extend to other regions of the world, said Putin at the Arctic Territory Forum in Arjanguelsk.
He said: "I don't think it's in the interests of the majority of the American people to bring the US-Russian relations to absurdity for the sake of domestic politics".
Putin noted that some political forces in the United States are exploiting the anti-Russia sentiment to improve their position within the country.
The investigation began in July, several months before the election, but Comey did not confirm the probe until his appearance at a House Intelligence Committee hearing this month.
Putin describes the allegations as part of the USA domestic political struggle.
Putin answered in kind, saying he would be glad to take part if such a meeting is held.
According to a Reuters report, the visit coincides with the opening of an global forum on Arctic development, which took place in the Russian city of Arkhangelsk, near the Arctic Circle.
Putin with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.
Putin has maintained throughout the entire process that he was not involved, but that hasn't stopped American media organizations from making it one of the most-discussed stories of 2017. He did so by quoting one of the United States presidents.
"But the USA and Russian Federation must both be keen to come to Helsinki, and the meeting must have substance associated with the arctic development", Niinisto said.
Peskov said there's no evidence that will contradict Putin's statements, calling claims otherwise "slander" and "fake news".
"The fact that the Obama administration incited the Europeans to act likewise harms the European competitiveness and resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands jobs", Putin said. "I hope that we will eventually come to constructive co-operation". We do not prevent it, on the contrary, we encourage it, he commented.
