That's already two heavy hitting baddies from the Aquaman mythology, adding a third player threatens to be a significantly overstuffed film.
It appears that Dolph Lundgren isn't done with the DC Universe any time soon, as The Hollywood Reporter revealed today that he has joined James Wan's Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa. Xebel is an seperate underwater kingdom neighboring Atlantis, and Lundgren's Nereus is described as a rival "who claims Mera as his own and wants to kill Aquaman".
Nereus is the leader of the Xebels, an exiled group of Atlanteans that Queen Mera, Aquaman's wife played by Amber Heard, was once part of. Nereus' first appearance in the DC Comics universe was in Aquaman #19 (April, 2013) by Geoff Johns and Paul Pelletier.
Dolph Lundgren is making his return to studio movies by diving deep into the world of comic book films. Aside from his most famous role as Ivan Drago in Rocky IV, Lundgren has played villains throughout his career, most recently on another DC Comics property - Arrow.
So far, the character has only appeared in five issues of Aquaman and seven issues of DC's Bomshells, so there's not a great deal of story to go on with him.
The James Wan-directed flick is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 21, 2018.
Additional cast members include Nicole Kidman as Aquaman's mother, Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Aquaman's father, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman's brother, Orm (aka Ocean Master), with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta and Willem Dafoe as Vulko. What do you think of the rest of the casting?
