He said: "Could Fernando win this year's Indy 500?".
"A big decision and big news obviously and he can do what he wants. But he has a great shot".
"One of my ambitions is to win the Triple Crown, which only one driver managed to achieve: Graham Hill", explained the double victor in Monaco in 2006 and 2007. Mansell finished third, and Piquet 32nd that year. And the F1 team will have its driver Fernando Alonso participate in the Indianapolis 500.
The race, scheduled for Memorial Day weekend (the last one in May), coincides with the 2017 Monaco GP, one of the most iconic stages in the Formula One championship.
"I realise I'll be on a steep learning curve, but I'll be flying to Indianapolis from Barcelona immediately after the Spanish Grand Prix, practising our McLaren-Honda-Andretti auto at Indy from May 15th onwards, hopefully clocking up a large number of miles every day, and I know how good the Andretti Autosport guys are".
Despite trouble with the McLaren-Honda F1 auto, Alonso is generally recognized as one of the best drivers in Formula 1, his drive at Indy 500 could easily mark a new era for the Spaniard.
Alonso's McLaren team announced on Wednesday that he will miss the showcase Monaco Grand Prix to race in the 101st edition of the USA race, with a auto run by last year's winners Andretti Autosport.
Hamilton added that he would like to test a Moto GP bike and race at NASCAR's Daytona 500 in the future, but not at the expense of an F1 race. "He's a racer, and he sets goals for himself".
Ive won the Monaco Grand Prix twice, and its one of my ambitions to win the Triple Crown. I definitely want to continue do all the races.
In order to compete at Indianapolis, Alonso will skip the Grand Prix of Monaco.
The Spaniard has illustrious career in F1 with 275 Grand Prix starts, 32 wins, 2 Formula One world champion titles and a 3 times F1 runner-up. Hill is also the only Triple Crown victor in motorsports.
Still, while this is being done in the service of chasing that Triple Crown, it'll be extremely tough for Alonso to win the Indy 500 during his first time racing in the event. In slightly weird news, Fernando Alonso has made a decision to miss one of Formula One's most prestigious events in favour of an entirely different event. For anyone wondering how the series would keep that momentum, having Alonso for the 101st makes a big difference.
Brown, who's in his first year in his position, said he's "delighted" to work with the Andretti team.
Alonso will race in a Honda-powered Andretti auto branded as a McLaren for the Indy 500, one of U.S. motorsports most prestigious races.
"I still think he is one of the best drivers, his calibre is very high, and he is experienced". But since then, the former Ferrari driver has not been able to match up with the best and his 2017 Formula One season has not gone according to plan so far. "It's going to be a great challenge".
