United States Champion Kevin Owens, former intercontinental champion Dolph Ziggler and Sami Zayn have arrived on SmackDown LIVE thanks to the superstar shake up.
Before clashing for the Raw Tag Team Titles at WWE Payback, The Hardy Boyz team with Cesaro & Sheamus to take on Team Red's so-called "good brothers" and The Shining Stars in an 8-Man Tag Team Match.
After a few words from Baron Corbin, Sami Zayn surfaced, becoming the second Superstar from RAW to jump ship and join the Smackdown Live roster. Bray Wyatt appeared on the tron to cause the distraction. Alpha's got the bulldog from the top rope but The USOS managed to survive and then proceeded to hit the frog splash after a blind tag to retain their titles.
The likes of Jinder Mahal and The Shining Stars aren't going to excite any WWE fan. And Rob Gronkowski is in the front row, and he just happened to cost Mahal the match at Wrestlemania. I will give WWE credit for sending Shinsuke Nakamura to Smackdown, as it would have been egregious for him to go to Raw as well. All of these moves make it easy to come up with talking points, but some of the biggest takeaways from Raw came from segments that didn't involve a new superstar.
Irrespective of who goes to what brand, the storylines that are established are of key importance. The best way to do that might be to send Reigns to "SmackDown Live", making a Reigns vs. John Cena SummerSlam 2017 main event possible. Feuds with Kevin Owens or Seth Rollins could be in Style's future, and he could potentially reunite with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson. Bryan's reason was that a title fight between Owens and Chris Jerico was already booked for Payback. He featured in a singles contest against Mojo Rawley only to end up losing. He brought out the entire SmackDown women's roster. McMahon pulled a swerve by announcing that a daughter of a Hall of Famer and tremendous athlete in her own right was joining the team, calling on Tamina Snuka.
U.S. Championship No. 1 Contender's Match - AJ Styles def. Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin via pinfall: Corbin held the advantage during the middle portion of the match, but Zayn had his moment with an exploder suplex on Corbin.
Tye Dillinger won with the Tye Breaker. With Simon Gotch gone, English might be getting a push, and he addresses that the spotlight is on him and he does it via song.
Styles celebrated in the ring to close the show.
That would be rarified air for a woman in WWE. Ziggler asked him if he could help him and who Nakamura thinks he is. Nakamura introduces himself and Ziggler tries to sneak attack him with a superkick.
The New Day vs. Zayn floored Corbin with a clothesline but before attempting a Heelluva kick, he ate Ushigoroshi from Styles. Zayn with a back kick then a spring board on Styles and Corbin.
There has been no indication of who might be next in line in the WWE Title picture after Randy Orton and Bray Wyatt meet in their House of Horrors match, also at Payback.
